Active Walkers are Welcome Towns

Ross-on-Wye

Accredited since: 2009

Ross-on-Wye holds an iconic position high above the sandstone cliffs and great horseshoe bends of the River Wye. It has a really high proportion of independent shops, including a Vintage Trail, food shops and tea rooms, local crafts and much more.
Ross is the only town that is entirely inside the Wye Valley Area Natural Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty); and claims to be the birthplace of British tourism when, in the 18th Century up market river tours replaced the Grand European Tour for many leading artists, poets and the like.
Ross hosts a number of festivals throughout the year building on local food & drink, music and activities; and in alternate years there is a river festival that travels of the length of the river Wye from Hay to Chepstow. The annual Ross-on-Wye Walking Festival (https://walkinginross.co.uk/ ) takes place at the end of September and offers beautiful walks, many with special interest features such as a birdwatching, local history/ geology, iconic views of the Wye gorge and surrounding countryside and a steam train ride in the nearby Forest of Dean. See Visit Ross On Wye – https://visitrossonwye.com/ – for information on what is on and where to stay, etc.
Ross-on-Wye is one of the early towns to gain WAW accreditation and takes its welcome of walkers seriously. Ross WaW Group specializes in providing led walks for visiting groups; and offers a range of self-guided routes as well as the very popular annual Walking Festival.
Walking in the Ross area has an amazing diversity to offer and opportunities to see/hear a range of wildlife when off the beaten track. It is also a great location for exploring more widely – from more demanding walks on the Brecon Beacons/ Black Mountains, to cycling in the Forest of Dean, the spectacles and history of Hereford Cathedral and Mappa Mundi, or just picnics by the river, open gardens, or enjoying the local art studios or food and drink products… We are off the beaten track; but still remarkably easy to get to with great road connections. We would love to see you…
