Pennine Journey

Kirkby Stephen & District Walkers are Welcome are celebrating with David and Heather Pitt and Pennine Journey Supporters Club:Wainwright Memorial Tablet

The Pennine Journey was devised by David and Heather Pitt having been inspired by Alfred Wainwright’s original Pennine Journey now 75 years ago.  This 18 stage, 247 mile new trail was also included in the first North Pennines Walking Festival in September 2013 with ‘PJ in a day’, walking all sections of the trail for various charities.  The Ordnance Survey will put the route of the Pennine Journey long-distance footpath onto their Landranger and Explorer maps in future reprints.

 

As well as Kirkby Stephen, Walkers are Welcome members Alston Moor are also a featured stop on the the southerly journey.

Kirkby Stephen have just unveiled a pavement tablet memorial to Alfred Wainwright marking 75 years since his Pennine Journey and 40 years since the publication of his Coast to Coast.
