WIVELISCOMBE

Wiveliscombe is a warm, welcoming historic town, full of unexpected and surprising discoveries. Set in a landscape of fine hills and intimate wooded valleys, accessed by ancient greenways and paths, the town is at the centre of the circular 23 mile “Wivey Way”, which can be walked in a day, or broken down into manageable sections, with paths leading back to Wiveliscombe.
The gentle hills of the Vale of Taunton Deane rise to the little known or walked Brendon Hills, which offer stunning panoramic views to Exmoor, the Blackdown and Quantock Hills, and further north to the Somerset coast, and across the Bristol Channel to Wales and the Brecon Beacons.
“Wiveliscombe Circular Walks” (ISBN 0-955286-0-0) describes walks for all abilities starting and finishing in the town, ranging from short town to long day walks, culminating in the “Wivey Way”. The town can be accessed by public transport via Taunton. Several walks, and the towns of Bampton, Dulverton, Wellington and Minehead are on bus routes, making a full and varied walking break possible for those not wanting to use private transport.
Wiveliscombe and the surrounding area offers a good range of accommodation from historic hotels and inns, B & Bs, self-catering cottages, and caravan sites. There are quality pubs and restaurants in and around the town, serving good food often using locally sourced produce, and beer from Wiveliscombe’s two breweries.
There are plans to link walking breaks with other activities such as the bi-annual “10 Parishes Arts Festival”, “Brewfest”, and other outdoor activities such as watersports at Wimbleball lake.
A successful 'Wivey Way Day' took place on 12th June 2010, with over 50 people participating in guided walks ranging from a one mile 'Gentle Walk' to a full circuit of the 23 mile Wivey Way. Other groups walked to the north and south of the town, meeting up with those on the longer walk who were travelling in the opposite direction.
